I Smell a Rat: Gourmet Thieves Make off with Two of Somerset’s Finest

Ah, that Giaconda smile! But the cheesy smile of Mona Lisa was not what bandits were after at the Yeovil Show in Somerset. It was cheese itself.

Sometime between closing on Saturday, July 17 and opening Sunday, some unsavory masterminds left the country fair 40kgs heavier than when they arrived. They stole two Wyke Farms cheddars: Farmhouse Vintage, and a crumbly Vintage. “Champion” and “Reserve Champion” carry no ransom as yet. Even the winner’s certificates were purloined, although passing off these bogus credentials may prove difficult.

According to The Guardian, Richard Clothier, managing director of Wyke Farms in Bruton, Somerset, said, “These cheeses could be considered masterpieces; it’s a bit like having a valuable painting stolen.” In fact, Lucy Francis, Wyke Farm’s brand manager, wrote on the website that Grandmother Ivy’s recipe lies in a safe, according to Yeovil Press.

The cheeses fetch ₤800, but possibly more on the black market.
